May 15th was the much talked about deadline for senior citizens enrolling in the federal prescription drug benefit program to sign up without penalty. But there’s an effort underway to inform seniors that some people who missed the deadline can still get into the program without paying the penalty. Anita Parran of AARP Missouri says certain seniors who qualify for what is called the Special Election Period catch a break – and there are quite a few of these individuals. These include so-called “extra help” seniors who had been – but are no longer – receiving prescription drug coverage from an employer or union, those who moved out of their plan’s service area, or those whose plan goes out of business. Then, there’s the senior citizen whose enrollment is nullified because of an error on the part of a federal employee or federal contractor.
