More than 500,000 Missouri veterans’ personal information might have been compromised when a Veterans Administration employee’s computer was stolen in Maryland. Officials are worried the names, birthdates, and Social Security numbers in those files will be used in identity theft. The Missouri Veterans Commission’s Stan Baughn admits the federal government is kind of washing its hands of the problem by telling veterans to watch out for themselves that their personal information is not misused, but that’s probably the only thing it can do. Baughn says veterans should not be worried that if they use their benefits they will put themselves at risk of having their personal information stolen.
