The wording of the ballot initiative to allow all federaly approved stem cell research to be conducted in Missouri will remain as is. The State Supreme Court has decided not to hear an appeal that challenges the language of the proposed constitutional amendment. The wording had been challenged by the group Missourians Against Human Cloning, which contends that a form of stem cell research known as Somatic Cell Nuclear Transfer amounts to human cloning. It claims the ballot summary, written by supporters of the initiative, is misleading because it claims human cloning would be banned. The Missouri Coalition for Lifesaving Cures, which is behind the effort, has collected more than the required number of signatures needed for inclusion on November’s ballot. Those signatures are currently being verified by the Secretary of State’s Office and local election authorities. Approval of all ballot initiatives is due by August 8th.
