What might be the final version of a comprehensive overhaul of the way political campaigns are run in Missouri has cleared the Senate and the sponsor hopes the House sends it right on to the Governor. Sponsor Charlie Shields of St. Joseph says the bill makes candidates more accountable for their finances; makes office-holders more accountable for their relationships with lobbyists; makes lobbyists more accountable for the money they spend; and makes campaign records more accessible to voters. The bill also says anyone who has pleaded guilty to a felony cannot run for office, and anyone behind in any taxes has 30 days to pay them or face removal from the ballot. The bill now goes to the House.
