The Kansas City Royals dropped to 0-11 on the road this season wit ha 4-1 loss at Detroit Tuesday evening. The Tigers’ pitching staff held the Royals to just five hits on the night. Kansas City’s only run was scored in the sixth inning when Reggie Sanders doubled in Kerry Robinson to cut Detroit’s lead to 2-1. Brandon Inge gave the Tigers a 2-0 advantage in the third inning with a two-run homer off Royals starter Mark Redman. He allowed three runs off five hits over 5.1 innings. Redman (0-2) walked two and struck out one.
Mike Maroth started for Detroit and got the win in a six-inning performance. Maroth (4-1) allowed a run off four hits and a walk.
The Royals’ futility on the road is reaching historic proportions. At 0-11 away from home, they are just three losses away from setting a Major League record for consecutive road losses to start the season. The 1969 Houston Astros and the 1988 Baltimore Orioles started the season with 12 road defeats. Kansas City will now travel to Minnesota for a two-game set and then they face the White Sox in Chicago this weekend.
At 5-19, the Royals have the worst record in baseball.
First baseman/DH Mike Sweeney was sent back to Kansas City have his back looked at. He hurt it while running out a grounder on Monday. He’s expected to be put on the disabled list.
