The State Senate has given preliminary approval to a bill that would crack down on illegal immigrants. Senator Bill Alter of High Ridge, the sponsor, says his legislation would put into state law things that are already illegal under federal law. Under Alter’s bill, anyone who is not a U.S. citizen or who is not a legal alien in this country would be ineligible for such benefits as welfare or food stamps. In addition, those individuals would be barred from admission to any public colleges and universities. The bill needs one more positive vote in the Senate before it heads to the House. The Bill is SB 1250.
