B.J. Smith has led the Southeast Missouri St. women’s basketball team to its best run ever and for that, he’s been rewarded. The university announced on Wednesday that Smith’s contract has been extended another three years.

In four seasons in Cape Girardeau, he’s led the Redhawks women’s basketball team to an overall record of 79-41 and they’re 51-17 in the Ohio Valley Conference. They’ve won at least 20 games in each of the last two seasons. In 2005-2006, they went 22-9, claimed a share of the OVC regular season crown and proceeded to win the conference tournament to earn the school’s first bid to the NCAA Tournament.

The new contract does address the NCAA investigation into the program, which is currently underway. Should there be a major violation found, Smith could be let out of his contract and fired.
