He was broke when he came to Missouri. He’d been urged to go to St. Louis because it was just the place to become Americanized and because he would hear only English spoken. But after one of his adventures an old man told him, “You seem to be right smart and able for a furriner….But you’ll never make a successful American until yer learn to drink, chew, and smoke.” Joseph Pulitzer began to have some doubt about English being spoken in St. Louis, but he did become a successful American. Today his name is nationally known.
