Southeast Missouri St. has announced its three finalists for its head coaching job and an one of the three is Jay Spoonhour, who served as an assistant at MU from 2004-2006. He was also an assistant at UNLV, under his father Charlie Spoonhour. When the elder Spoonhour resigned during the 2003-2004 season, Jay was named interim head coach. He also led Wabash Valley College (Illinois) to the NJCAA National Championship.

The other two candidates are Scott Edgar, an assistant at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville and Rod Barnes, the former head basketball coach at Ole’ Miss.

In 2001, Barnes was named the National Coach of the Year by CollegeInsider.com and the National Association of Basketball Coaches’. He and Ole’ Miss parted ways after the end of the 2005-2006 season, after going 14-16.

Southeast Missouri St. is looking to replace former head coach Gary Garner, who stepped down this past season.
