The Kansas City Royals picked second baseman Tony Graffanino off waivers Tuesday, marking his return to the team. Graffanino was dealt from the Royals to the Red Sox last July and hit .319 over the final 51 games of the season.

Graffanino comes to the club knowing that he won’t be a starter—Mark Grudzielanek, who signed with the Royals this off-season, will be the everyday second baseman. However, concerns surrounding Grudzielanek’s back, may mean more playing time for Graffanino.
