The incumbent has now filed to run in this year’s U.S. Senate race in Missouri. Senator Jim Talent, joined by his family, signed the documents today at the Secretary of State’s Office in Jefferson City. If, as expected, Talent wins the Republican primary, his likely Democratic opponent would be State Auditor Claire McCaskill, who is her party’s choice. Talent says several issues will be important in this race, including the overall question of who can best represent Missourians on Capitol Hill. Democrats have been taking aim at Talent’s position on the stem cell research debate, claiming he has not taken a stand. Talent says he has been clear in that he favors an effective ban on human cloning while supporting stem cell research. He believes that with the new technology that has been developed, the two can go together. He hastens to add, however, that stem cell research is one of many issues that will be important during this campaign.
