An effort to increase the food stamps available to the elderly is moving forward in the Legislature. The House has endorsed Speaker Rod Jetton’s proposal to request the federal government give Missouri permission to add to its food stamp program for senior citizens. Jetton has proposed a three-prong approach to battling hunger. If the state receives permission from the federal government, it would supplement the federal food stamp program for senior citizens. Jetton also wants to add one million dollars to the meals-on-wheels program. And he proposes giving a 50 percent tax credit to individuals and businesses which donate to food pantries.
