The note was addressed to Colonel William G. Monor. It was from one of the most popular men in the state. But the note charged that its writer had been slandered and abused by his enemies. The writer complained that his best efforts had not been appreciated. Those things, and failing health, are considered reasons why a shot rang out in the Governor’s office one day in 1844. When a passerby went to see what had happened, he found the Governor of Missouri had committed suicide.
