Missouri’s senior U.S. Senator takes exception to a Pentagon-sponsored report that says the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have stretched the U.S. Army nearly to the breaking point. Senator Kit Bond admits he has not read the report and says even if that’s true, the key to relieving any pressure on American troops there is to hand over more of the mission to the Iraqis. Bond does believe, however, that the National Guard is being stretched too thin. He says 40 to 50 percent of the troops in Iraq are National Guard, while the Guard is still being expected to pick up their more traditional natural disaster recovery missions back home.
