The Springfield’s 22nd annual Tournament of Champions concluded yesterday with St. Louis Vashon beating Christ the King (New York) 69-59 at the Hammons Student Center on Sunday night. After one half of play, the two teams were deadlocked at 26-26.

In the third quarter, Vashon pulled away by outscoring Christ the King 20-10 and never looked back. Leon Powell led the Wolverines with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Teammates James Washington and Bobby Hill also had big contributions. Washington, who was named tournament MVP, had two points, nine rebounds and five assists, while Hill scored 17 and grabbed seven rebounds.

The win moved Vashon to 14-1 on the season and dropped Christ the King to 11-1. Vashon guard

In the third-place game, Northside High School (Lafayette, La.) beat Santa Fe High School (Edmund, Ok.) 59-55. For fifth place, it was Jefferson High School (Portland, Ore.) topping Huffman High School (Birmingham, Al.) 53-51. Springfield Kickapoo won the seventh-place game with a 61-49 victory over Nixa.
