The Missouri St. Bears topped Illinois St. 70-54 on Wednesday, thanks to a consistent defensive effort. The Bears held the Redbirds to 33 percent shooting and every member of the ISU’s roster was held under ten points.

Coming into the game, the Bears were attempting 18 three pointers per game, but cut that number drastically on Wednesday. The decision to focus on the inside seemed to work, as MSU hit 50 percent of their shots. The few three’s they did shoot, seemed to be well-placed, as they hit 5-of-7 in the win. Blake Ahearn was responsible for most of the long-bombs, hitting 4-of-5 and finishing with a game-high 20 points.

Nathan Bilyeu had the most well-rounded game for Missouri St.. His line: 12 points, seven rebounds, four assists, four steals and a block. Tyler Chaney added 16 points and eight rebounds, while Sky Frazier scored 11.

With the win, Missouri St. improved to 11-3 on the season and 4-2 in the Missouri Valley Conference, while Illinois St. dropped deeper into the MVC basement. The Redbirds are 6-8 and 1-5, tied with Indiana St. for last place in the Valley.
