Ava in southwest Missouri is the home of a place that becomes world-famous at this time of year. Assumption Abbey is located nearby and the Trappist Monks there make some of the finest fruitcake to grace a holiday table. Brother Matthew Flatley of the Abbey says about 40,000 of their fruitcakes go all over the world every year. So, what makes the fruitcakes so popular? Well, Flatley says the monks make them with fresh eggs, butter, candied fruits, and nuts. Then, they’re injected with rum and aged for a couple of months. But Flatley believes it’s the care and prayer his colleagues put into each and every one.
