Missouri State University in Springfield could be cutting five of its 21 intercollegiate sports. MSU President Michael Nietzel says he’ll take his plan to the Board of Governors next week. Nietzel wants to dump men’s indoor and outdoor track, cross country, and men’s and women’s tennis. He’s leaving football alone, but warns the school might have to move to a non-scholarship football program someday. Football scholarships cost the university about one-million dollars a year. Nietzel thinks the university will save about $350,000 a year. The cuts will affect 39 students. They’ll keep their scholarships as long as they stay at the school.
