A Jackson County Circuit Judge has issued a ruling on a challenge to Missouri’s parental notification abortion law which was passed by the General Assembly and signed by Governor Blunt earlier this year. Judge Charles Atwell says the law is constitutional, but he has issued an injunction against the law going into effect. Planned Parenthood is one of the plaintiffs challenging the law. Peter Brownlee of Planned Parenthood of Kansas and Mid-Missouri says the law is on hold until the challenge is appealed to, and heard by, the State Supreme Court. In essence, the law would hold legally liable anyone who helps a minor obtain an abortion without the consent of the minor’s parents. Brownlee expects the paperwork for the Supreme Court challenge to be filed within the next couple of weeks.
