Earlier this year the Cardinals said Wayne Hagin would be back when the team began broadcasting on KTRS. On Thursday the Cardinals gave Hagin his walking papers, when it announced that John Rooney will be their newest broadcaster.

Rooney has spent the last 17 seasons as the radio voice of the Chicago White Sox, but his time there ended when he called the final out of Chicago’s World Series championship.

Rooney was a top candidate to be the permanent replacement for Jack Buck in 2003, but was under contract with the White Sox. That contract was up after this season and the White Sox didn’t renew it. Rooney recently ended 17 years doing White Sox games on the radio. The White Sox are changing flagship stations wanted to make a change.

Rooney, who hails from Richmond, Missouri, is the former voicer Sports Director of the Missourinet and was the radio voice of University of Missouri basketball team.
