Governor Matt Blunt’s new education initiative is getting the thumbs down from the Missouri School Boards’ Association. The initiative, known as “Our Students First – First Class Education for Missouri,” would require that 65 cents of every dollar spent in school districts be used in the classroom for teachers and students. Brent Ghan with the Missouri School Boards’ Association says this infringes on local control. And, he’s concerned there’ll be disagreement over what’s considered “classroom” spending and what we think of as “administrative” spending, which might include librarians and school counselors. The Governor wants his proposal to become a Constitutional amendment that would have to be approved by a vote of the people next year.
