The Leader of the State Senate has mixed reactions to the petition effort to bring about a constitutional amendment to protect stem cell research in Missouri. Senator Michael Gibbons of Kirkwood says that while the move would ban human cloning efforts – which he likes – it would also take the stem cell issue out of the hands of lawmakers – something he doesn’t like. Gibbons says there is no doubt, during an election year, that a good many lawmakers will like the idea of avoiding the stem cell issue by sending it to a vote of the people. But, he says the Legislature is best suited to deal with this complicated matter.
