On the average they could count on losing then more games than they won every year. In sixty-one years they won more games than they lost only twenty-one times. And in the fifty-three seasons after 1900, they achieved that high plateau only thirteen times. They won five pennants, four of them before the turn of the century. They finished second five times, but only twice after 1900. They finished last or next to last twenty-two times in their last fifty-three years as a team, and in the second division of their league forty times in the first fifty-three years that are considered modern baseball.
