The State Supreme Court has told Missouri lawyers they better shoot straight when they advertise their services. You’ve seen or heard the ads – I’ve settled IRS claims for pennies on the dollar. Been hurt in a car wreck? Call me. I get cash settlements. Take a pill? Think it caused an ache, a pain, or a death? I’ll sue somebody for you. The Supreme Court is telling lawyers not to overstate their results or their qualifications and not to lead potential clients to think a settlement is assured. St. Louis lawyer Mark Levison headed the committee that suggested the new regulations. He says the public should look beyond the claims. The new lawyer advertising rules say broadcast ads must tell people not to hire an attorney only because of the advertisement and to look for a local lawyer before they go for a lawyer from another state who solicits their business in an ad.
