Missouri State’s football team was supposed to travel to Huntsville, Texas this week for a Saturday match up with Sam Houston State, but that game has been cancelled, due to the threat of Hurricane Rita. Efforts were made by SHSU to find another site to hold the game.

“They couldn’t find a place and couldn’t get to it,” said Missouri St. Sports Information Director Mark Stillwell. The highways are at a stand-still and airports are being closed in anticipation of the category five hurricane.

Sam Houston St. made it clear that hosting the game in Springfield was not an option, deciding instead to cancel it. The game will not be made up.

This will leave both teams short a game and with less revenue, but Stillwell said that football and money are of little importance right now, calling the game “secondary concern”. Stillwell added, “Our thoughts and prayers are with the people down in that whole part of the country, particularly in light of what happened three weeks ago over in the gulf coast….your heart just goes out to those people.”
