It took less than three hours for the St. Louis Cardinals to sell about 91,000 tickets to the seven possible home games they could play in the National League Division Series and the National League Championship Series on Monday. In previous years, getting tickets often meant waiting in long lines, even spending the night outside of Busch Stadium. But this year tickets were only available over the phone or online.
“With the construction (of the new Busch Stadium) next door, from a safety standpoint, there’s really not a good way to form long lines around the construction project,” said Joe Strohm, Senior Director of Ticket Sales for the St. Louis Cardinals.
According to Strohm, this move will hopefully limit the number of scalped tickets because when there are physical lines ticket scalpers can get people in line to purchase tickets for them.
There was another change this year: fans were limited to just six tickets per game for the NLDS and just four for the NLCS, instead of the twelve tickets they were allowed to purchase last year. This is also supposed to limit the number of tickets that end up in the hands of scalpers, but it has another purpose as well.
“It allows the fans that are out of the market to have equal access (to buying the tickets),” said Strohm.
World Series tickets are not on sale yet.
