Changes to the workers’ compensation Law won’t become effective until mid-December, perhaps leaving some workers without coverage of workplace injuries. House Republicans have failed to get enough Democrats to vote for an emergency clause to make the changes effective immediately upon the signature of the Governor. Senate Republicans couldn’t convince Democrats to go along either. The workers’ comp bill became very controversial during the regular session and Democrats adamantly opposed to it refused to go along with a measure that would enact the changes sooner. Republicans counter that their action will leave workers unprotected for the next three months.
