When it came right down to it, Mike Wood only made one real mistake on Wednesday. The third inning home run her served up to Paul Konerko gave the White Sox a 1-0 lead over the Royals. In the end, that proved to be the only difference between the two teams, as Chicago took a 1-0 win over Kansas City.

Konerko’s home run was his 36th of the season and was just one of six hits Wood (4-6) gave up in the loss. Jose Contreras (11-7) held the Royals in check over 7 2/3 innings, allowing six hits and five walks.

Kansas City put the lead-off hitter on base in four of the first five innings and loaded the bases in the first and put at least two runners on board in four different innings, including the ninth.
