Manuel Lisa was a Spaniard who came upriver to St. Louis before the start of the nineteenth century and quickly saw that a fortune could be made on the frontier. He led the vanguard of the furtrading empires to come, followed after Lewis and Clark in exploration of the near Northwest, and amassed the fortune he sought. He did it all before the years generally considered to be the fur-trading era.
