If the New Orleans Hornets need a new home once the NBA season begins, Kansas City is willing to give them one. Kansas city Mayor Kay Barnes has extended the invitation to the team, which may be without the services of its arena because of the devastation left behind by Hurricane Katrina.

The Hornets arena is near the Superdome, which has served as a shelter for those left homeless by the hurricane. Kansas City is not alone in the extension of hospitality. Oklahoma City, San Diego and Nashville have also made offers to the Hornets.

Kansas City is trying to lure either an NBA or NHL franchise to occupy its new downtown arena, which is expected to open in 2007.

Last week NBA deputy commissioner said that the Hornets might not be able to play their home games in New Orleans this year.

The team has expressed interest in staying closer to home, which might make LSU or the University of Southwestern Louisiana’s venues more feasible.
