The Royals had to overcome a three-run deficit and hold on late to beat the Red Sox 4-3 in eleven innings at Kauffman Stadium. Chip Ambres lifted a sacrifice fly to Manny Ramirez in left field in the bottom of the 11th , David DeJesus raced home and slid under, who slid under Jason Varitek’s tag to win it. The victory ended the Royals’ franchise-record nine-game losing streak at home. After DeJesus walked, Terrence Long hit his third single of the game to move him to third base.

Earlier in the game, DeJesus tied the game at 3-3 with a two-run homer off Boston starter Matt Clement. It was his ninth home run of the season.

Boston took a 3-0 lead thanks to runs in each of the first three innings off Royals starter D.J. Carrasco. Manny Ramirez singled in former Royal Johnny Damon in the first. In the second inning, Kevin Millar hit his fifth home run of the season and in the third David Ortiz grounded into a double play, with runners at first and third, but Damon scored from third.

Carrasco lasted 5 2/3 innings and got the no decision. Andy Sisco, who pitched the final two innings of the game, got the win, improving to 2-2. Bronson Arroyo got the loss for the Red Sox.

The Red Sox had their opportunities to break the game open in the fifth, sixth and seventh when they loaded the bases but failed to get a single run.

Royals pitcher Runelvys Hernandez lost his appeal with Major League Baseball and was given a 10-game suspension for his part in a bench-clearing brawl with the Tigers on July 17. Hernandez threw inside to the Tigers’ Carlos Guillen and was warned. Hernandez hit Guillen on the head with the next pitch. Hernandez still claims it was unintentional.
