The Base Realignment and Closure Commission has told the Pentagon its plans to shut down or reduce the number of Air National Guard units are unacceptable, might be illegal, and will hurt recruiting and retention of future Guard and Reserve members. The stance has encouraged Missouri officials, fighting Pentagon recommendations to close a unit in St. Louis. One of the targets of the Pentagon’s recommendations is the 131st Fighter Wing at Lambert-St. Louis Airport. The Commission has criticized the Air Force for failing to consult with Air National Guard officials in reaching decisions. A National Guard unit is a part of the military, but serves under the direction of the governor unless called into federal service.
