The State Board of Education has voted unanimously to approve a Special Administrative Board to run the troubled Wellston School District in St. Louis County. But a judge will decide whether the new board takes over on time. The plan approved by the State Board of Education creates a Special Administrative Board to replace Wellston’s existing administration. It would take effect Thursday ngiht at midnight, when the District is dissolved. Charles Brown, an assistant commissioner with the State Education Department, will chair the three-member Board. He wants to move quickly to decide which teachers stay. He’ll do that by meeting with the district’s 100 or so employees. But the existing Board wants to put the brakes on the takeover. Attorney Chuck Ford has asked for a temporary restraining order as a prelude to an injunction request. If successful, an injunction hearing would be held within fifteen days. Cole County Circuit Judge Richard Callahan will hear the arguments Thursday morning in Jefferson City.
