A two-run rally in the bottom of the ninth was too little, too late for the Springfield Cardinals in an 8-3 loss to Corpus Christi on Tuesday. The Hooks took an 8-1 lead thanks, in part, to Eric Riggs, who was 3-for-4 with two RBI’s. Corpus Christi starting pitcher Philip Barzilla held the Cardinals to just one run on six hits in five innings of work to get the win.

The Cardinals trailed 2-1 in the fifth inning when reliever Jeremy Cook threw a wild pitch, which allowed Charlton Jimerson and Riggs to score to make it 4-1. Riggs drove in a run with a single in a three-run rally in the seventh inning and drove in his final run of the game with a single in the eighth.

Aaron Herr hit a two-run homer in the ninth to account for the 8-3 final. It was his tenth of the season and third in the last three games.
