In 1840, Martin Van Buren was seeking the presidency against William Henry Harrison. Van Buren was a Democrat. Harrison belonged to the now-vanished party, the Whigs. It was a hotly contested race nationwide and a state like Missouri, where politics had been slow to catch on after statehood, found itself wrapped up in the race.
