The U.S. Senate moves forward with plans to increase the use of ethanol and other renewable fuels by making a renewable fuels requirement part of the Senate version of the Energy Bill. Senator Jim Talent has been a key player in the effort to get more ethanol and biodiesel into our gas tanks, putting forward an amendment to hike production. He says we can expect to see annual production of these fuels reaching 8-Billion gallons by the year 2012. Talent says greater use of renewable fuels will decrease dependency on imported oil. The so-called Renewable Fuels Standard is one aspect of a much larger Energy Bill. The Senate version will have to be reconciled with the House’s version to iron out the differences.
