The emphasis at the 1916 Democratic National Convention was to be Americanism. Woodrow Wilson, a cinch for renomination, knew that unity should be the theme – unity in the face of increasing complications and military threats in Europe. The convention in St. Louis beginning on Flag Day opened with the singing of “America,” then the “Star-Spangled Banner.” Out of that convention would come one of the most misunderstood phrases in American political history.
