Roy Halladay silenced the Cardinals’ bats on Monday with a complete game five-hitter, as the Blue Jays topped the St. Louis 4-1 in Toronto. Hallady, who won the 2003 Cy Young Award, recorded his sixth win in his last seven starts to improve to 10-3. John Garland is the only other American League pitcher with 10 wins.
Cardinal starter Jeff Suppan got the loss by allowing three runs off eight hits and three walks over six innings. The Blue Jays got to him early by scoring two runs in the first inning. Vernon Wells hit a sacrifice fly and Shea Hillenbrand drilled a solo home run to center field to make it 2-0.
In the second inning, Russ Adams drove in Aaron Hill with a single to give Toronto a 3-0 advantage.
After that, Suppan (5-6) held Toronto scoreless, but the his teammates couldn’t figure out Halladay. The only person who got a run off him was John Mabry, who blasted a solo home run in the fourth inning.
Reliever Cal Eldred made his first big league appearance since Aril 10th and allowed a run off two hits and a walk in the eighth inning. Eldred went on the DL in April with a rare condition that caused swelling around his heart.
Cardinal outfielder Larry Walker told a group of mostly Canadian reporters before yesterday’s game that this will probably be his last year in the majors.
