The Cardinals and Red Sox had to wait out a three hour rain delay on Tuesday. Once the rain stopped, St. Louis’ offense went with it in a 4-0 loss to Boston. Red Sox starter David Wells lasted eight innings and held the Cardinals to four hits, no walks and no runs to get the win.

Cardinal starter Chris Carpenter pitched well but, had trouble in the sixth inning when Boston scored three runs. The only one they needed came when David Ortiz launched a solo home run, his 15th of the season. Later in the inning Jason Varitek drove in Kevin Millar and Trot Nixon with a double to make it 3-0.

In the top of the ninth inning, former Cardinals shortstop Edgar Renteria hit a solo home run to make it a 4-0 Boston advantage. In the bottom half of the inning, Albert Pujols and Reggie Sanders hit back-to-back two-out doubles off reliever Kevin Foulke. Jim Edmonds was up next and line out to end the game.

With the loss, Carpenter dropped to 8-4 on the season.

A day after Scott Van Slyke was taken by the Dodgers, his older brother A.J. Van Slyke was taken by the Cardinals in the 23rd round .They’re the sons of former Cardinal Andy Van Slyke. A.J. currently plays for KU.
