He was a sports hero at Central High School in Kansas City, a football and basketball player, a pitcher and infielder on the school baseball team. They called him “Dutch” and many would remember him as a kid who got into fights during basketball games. He wanted to be a dentist for a while, but one day – the story goes – he hoisted a patient seated in a dental chair clear to the ceiling while daydreaming about baseball. He emerged years later as the biggest winner and the biggest loser in baseball history – Casey Stengel.
