He walked to Missouri from Vincennes, Indiana, his entire wardrobe carried on his back in a small bundle. He settled in St. Charles where he stayed a year to learn French, then moved to St. Louis. In His mid-thirties, Edward Hempstead began a career which would earn him respect as one of our state’s most able lawyers. That respect would also put him in Washington as the first congressional delegate Missouri ever had.
