The Central Missouri St. baseball team had its 16-game winning streak snapped 5-3 by Florida Southern in the semifinals of the NCAA Division II College World Series in Montgomery, Alabama Thursday.

The top-ranked Mules couldn’t get it going against the second-ranked Moccasins. Starting pitcher Jason Schutt was man-handled in the second inning and was yanked beofre he could record the third out of the frame. Florida Southern exploded for five runs with Schutt on the mound, though only two of them were earned.

After that, Florida Southern was held to just one hit, thanks to Mike Phelps who went 6 1/3 innings for CMSU. The Mules scored runs in the seventh and ninth, but it wasn’t enough.

In the first, shortstop Shawn Callahan gave the Mules a brief 1-0 lead with an RBI double to score center fielder Will Bradley.

CMSU, which beat Florida Southern in their first game of the CWS, will face them again on Friday at 2:30. The winner advances to the championship against North Florida and the loser goes home.
