He was a most unusual governor, perhaps one of the more practical ones. He campaigned for the office on the basis that it paid too much. His inaugural address was so short many state lawmakers who were celebrating in a nearby pub showed up a little late and missed it entirely. Then he vetoed the daily compensation and travel allowance for members of the legislature.
He was Alexander McNair, our state’s first governor. His victory was a surprise to many.
