Some communities have used tax increment financing to strengthen their economic base. But critics in the Legislature say other communities have abused the system. Tax increment financing lets new or expanding businesses finance their construction by keeping part of their property taxes. But Senator Tim Green of Spanish Lake, a strong critic of TIF abuse, says it’s too easy to get tax breaks for things the program was not designed to help. He’s been promised a special legisaltive committee will investigate the abuses during the summer with recommendations for action next year.
