The man named Winn was wounded in the battle and was unable to escape with his friends. When the Indians found him, they stacked wood around him and set it afire. With flames soaring, the chief pointed to the dead Indians around him and addressed the wounded white man, “See there! You have killed all that was dear to me: my brother, my brother’s wife and her child . . . . You are not brave, you are a dog.”With that the Indian leaped over the flames and scalped the white man, cut open his chest and cut out his heart. The Big Neck Affair had begun.
