A St. Louis University professor of theology remembers a lesson many years ago from the man who is now in charge of the entire Roman Catholic Church. Ronald Modras took a theology class taught by then-Father Joseph Ratzinger – now Pope Benedict the Sixteenth – at a German university in 1968. Modras says that is the same year Ratzinger went from being considered a progressive thinker to more conservative, upset by how some students were interpreting the Second Vatican Council he helped serve on in the mid-1960s. Vatican Two is considered one of the most progressive moves the church has taken in centuries. Modras says that change will probably be re-opened by analysts today. Modras admits his breath was taken away when he saw his former teacher introduced to the world as Pope Benedict XVI.
