The annual fight over money has begun on the floor of the House. Democrats have been critical of the $19-Billion budget, which closely tracks the budget submitted by Governor Matt Blunt. Democrats say Blunt has promised to protect children, but then has agreed to cuts in a number of programs that serve children. And they say a slight increase in the school funding formula is offset by cuts to other children’s programs. Republicans defend the cuts, saying the state must live within its means and cuts are necessary to balance the budget. Debate should wrap up today.
