A state agency accused of wasting tax dollars in the past has now been hit with a state audit that says it is not spending enough when it comes to buying property. State Auditor Claire McCaskill says the State Transportation Department is trying to low-ball some landowners when it buys property for right-of-ways. McCaskill says half the landowners’ auditors surveyed said the initial offer by MoDOT was less than fair market value. But MoDOT’s Bob Brendel denies the agency is trying to take advantage of landowners. Brendel adds, however, that MoDOT has already implemented many of the recommendations in the audit.
