A St. Louis University professor of theology gives some insight as to what will happen once Pope John Paul the Second dies. The Pope’s health has taken a turn for the worst. Ronald Modras says the Catholic Church Cardinals from all over the world will gather at the Vatican for the funeral and to pick a successor. He says it’s an elaborate process shrouded in secrecy that can produce some surprises. Modras believes the next Pope could be someone who speaks Arabic and has close contact with the Muslim world, or someone from the largest growing group of Catholics – a South American. But he says the successor could end up being someone from Italy, restoring a 450-year line of Italian popes broken only by the Polish John Paul the Second.
