The final championship game of the the 2005 MSHSAA Show-Me Showdown Saturday had the Clopton Hawks of Clarksville going up against the Metro Panthers of St. Louis for the Class 2 Girls Championship. Clopton entered the contest a perfect 31-0 on the season, hoping to hold off a 28-3 Metro squad eager to give the Hawks the only blemish on their unspoiled record. When all was said and done prefection won out as Clopton captured its first State Championship with a 57-50 win over a tough Metro team. Guard Mikal Bencomo les all scorers in the contest with 17 points. Forward Alicia Turner added 15 points. Center Brandi Tipton scored 14 points and pulled down 12 rebounds. Guard Lauren Witherspoon was the top scorer for the Panthers, with 15 points. Clopton’s success in recent years is hard to duplicate – Its record over the past three seasons is now 92-2. But the Hawks had failed to win the title, until now, as this season comes to a perfect conclusion.
